Volunteering During a Stay-at-Home Order

You may be feeling like you have extra free time while stuck at home through this stay-at-home order. Or maybe you feel like all your free time is filled with Netflix or social media scrolling. Why not take your extra time and do some good. Here are some ways you can volunteer and help your community during this uncertain time.

Donate to a charity of your choice. Many charities are working to bring aid to those affected by COVID-19. Feeding America, The American Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders are just a few great nonprofits in need of your support.

Sew facemasks to donate healthcare workers and those in need. Cloth masks can help slow the spread of COVID-19. The CDC released a step-by-step guide of how you can sew your own fabric masks. You’ll need some cotton fabric, rubber bands, scissors and a sewing machine. Get the whole family together and you can sew masks for all your friends and neighbors.

Write letters to senior citizens in nursing homes. Many of us have loved ones in nursing homes. During the COVID-19 outbreak, nursing homes have become breeding grounds for viral exposure. In an effort to help slow the spread, many nursing homes have eliminated outside visitors.

We all know how isolating staying home can be, so why not send handwritten letters to a local nursing home? This can be a great activity to show your love and concern for those unable to be around family right now.

Help deliver meals to vulnerable populations. Going to the grocery store can be extremely dangerous—especially for those who are elderly or have underlying health conditions. You can work with local meal delivery services, like Meals on Wheels, to help deliver food to those in need.

These are just a few ways you can help out in your community while keeping safe. Many people are in need of your support so try sewing masks, making a donation your favorite nonprofit, writing letters to loved ones, or delivering meals. Everything makes a difference, and your help is much appreciated.

Stay in the loop with us during this crazy time, especially when we’re all on our stay-at-home grind, on StarterNoise.
