Being authentic is arguably one of the most important skills leaders must exhibit to their staff partners.
So, what does being an authentic leader mean? Authenticity is often defined as being true to one’s self, living in the moment with confidence, and being present.
At first glance, it may seem quite easy to be authentic. But, many business leaders struggle with being truly transparent, relatable, and honest. Below are a few components of authentic leadership to reflect and consider.
Self-Awareness
We all need to be aware of how we individually affect others—it is critical to being an authentic leader.
Give yourself some time to reflect on what you bring to the table. Do you have the ability to look inward and assess what your strengths and weaknesses are? Are you able to be honest with others about your strengths and weaknesses so you can better work together in a team?
Being self-aware allows you to understand what impact you have in an environment—and in this case, what impact you have on your work culture.
Transparency
Being transparent is challenging. As business leaders, we want to create a sense of positivity for those around us. But sugar-coating things is not always what’s best.
We need to be able to be direct and transparent to those around us. Although it does take a bit of finessing, being able to be present and assertive when speaking with staff partners, helps foster deeper relationships and trust.
Perspective
Have you ever heard the saying, “try putting yourself in their shoes”?
As leaders, we need to be able to have perspective on how others feel and manage their emotions. Everyone handles situations slightly different than the next person. Be willing and open to see other’s perspectives. You’ll create more welcoming and open communication between you and your staff partners.
Being an authentic leader is no easy feat. But, if you can truly be true to yourself and open to other’s perspectives, you will be on your way to creating a healthy work environment.
