Most of us have been working from home for the past 12 or so months. In fact, 88% of employers have transitioned to work-from-home operations since the onset of the pandemic.
It’s no surprise that this past year and a half has been stressful, and our new-found work-from-home environment has presented some challenges. Perhaps, you are a parent trying to homeschool and work full-time, or maybe, you and your partner are both living, working, and exercising from a small apartment. Whatever the case may be, the COVID-19 pandemic has blurred the lines between our professional and personal lives.
The New York Post recently found that Americans feel fairly guilty while working from home. For example, 29% don’t take any time for meal breaks and over 65% feel worried about their overall productivity and fearful of losing their jobs.
As we navigate this new frontier, many of us may be feeling guilty about doing anything at home other than working. But, work-from-home guilt only leads to negative feelings that undermine performance and create conflicts.
You must remember that you are far more productive than you think. Chances are, you’re able to tackle more calls and meetings throughout the day and your working environment is far more convenient – hence, no more commute!
On the flipside, you’re likely saving money for your employer. With more people working from home, companies are able to save on hard costs associated with office space and travel.
Plus, working from home is most likely here to stay. With uncertainty around when activities will return to “normal,” remote work may be permanent for many companies.
Your work-from-home lifestyle is quite a bit different than the way life was a year and a half ago. But, you have to trust in yourself and know that you are doing far more than you think. On top of supporting your work responsibilities and goals, be sure to take time for your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
