Coronavirus has turned our day-to-day lives upside down in a matter of days. Companies across the country are mandating work from home policies for their employees. Although remote work has been an option for some, others are entering into a new frontier and needing to embrace a work from home lifestyle.
So how can you best prepare for shifting your office job to working from home? Here are a few quick and easy tips to help make the transition easy.
Get Comfortable in your Workspace
You need to create a workspace that mentally prepares you to get your job done. Not everyone has a dedicated office space, but you can prepare a small desk or space at the kitchen table to tackle your daily job duties. Try not to pick a space that you traditionally use to relax (like your bed or living room couch). But if all you have is your big comfy couch by the T.V. – then, by all means, find a way to make that work. You need to figure out what works for you. If your initial space is no longer conducive to getting your job tasks completed, pivot from there until you’re comfortable.
Create a Routine
Those who have been working from home for extended periods of time often complain about “being on the clock 24/7.” It’s important to start your workday around the same time every day, and when possible, end around the same time. You want to set parameters around work time and personal time. Take intentional breaks throughout your day to eat lunch or get outside and go for a walk.
Dress for Success
Working from home does allow you to lounge around in your comfy clothes and not put extensive effort into your overall “look.” Day after day of not getting yourself ready can make you feel sluggish. Take some time to dress for success and get yourself ready for work. If you were going into the office, you’d need to make yourself look and feel presentable—so do the same when you “go to work” in your home.
You can still get your job done effectively while working remotely – just make sure you have the tools and resources you need to be successful. It’s hard to say how long we will be impacted by coronavirus, but taking a few simple steps to make your work-from-home experience better can make a huge difference.
